As something of an aside but not completely incidentally, I'm just now
returning from the first meeting of something called the Open Government
Partnership http://www.opengovpartnership.org which is I gather, Barak
Obama's (perhaps premature) attempt at providing a global legacy. Its first
year was managed by the US and Brazil but now the UK (evidently with the
direct support of PM David Cameron) has taken over the co-chairmanship. It
is worth taking a look at this development as it is, I think the first time
that "civil society" has been granted co-equivalence with national
governments in a global mulitlateral initiative.

I've blogged on this at

rnment-the-answer-is-very-much-indeed/

Best,

Well, you know surveys. But perhaps a partial reflection of sentiments.
Keith has no cause to relocate, right?

I'm of an age and condition when I can't even locate out of the house I live
in. If I were young and untrammelled I'm not at all sure where I'd fancy
going to. I'd have to sleep on this one! However, I can well believe that
almost half our population wants to leave the UK. Our governments, left or
right, are fast becoming either corrupt or a joke. When you consider that
our last two ex-prime ministers, Blair and Brown, hardly ever dare show
their faces in public for fear of remonstrance, then this gives a measure of
the demoralization of the last decade or so. But I don't believe that modern
societies necessarily have to collapse completely, as the older, simpler
ones did. As we were the first into the industrial revolution, maybe we are
already leaving it and feeling our way into the next one. If so, then the
next few decades could be very interesting and I'd certainly want to stay
and observe it!

Incidentally, the Sun is one of our trash newspapers, but its political
editor, Trevor Kavanagh, is paradoxically one of the most perceptive
journalists in the country. He always has his finger on the pulse.
