How do you know when you're dealing with an economic snake oil salesman and
swindler? Easy. The first thing out of his mouth is a "false dilemma":
either you pander to the oil companies or you are an effete, latte-sipping
snob.

Levant is the kind of blatant con-man who leaves the naive observer
perplexed. How does he get away with it? How could anyone swallow such a
load of codswallop? It's actually a rather simple trick. It's called
"complicity." Levant (and his oil corporation sponsors) offers his dupes
the illusion of a piece of the action: "All this will be yours, suckers, if
only you will overlook the environmental consequences and the cronyism!"
Then when he and they don't deliver, the dupes are too compromised by their
complicity to admit that they've been swindled.
