Wonder if similar sentiments could be found in other countries where this
grotesque over the top Olympic hype "brings out the best a country has to
offer".

Does this mean the mantra"Win at all cost." now pervades the entire U.S. 
of A. mentality? No empathy. No appreciation. No grace in defeat, because
defeat is not allowed? Obviously good sportsmanship is not taught in the
schools and, of course, when it comes to war there is no such concern when
attempting to kill someone.

I think those comments sum up the general American attitude very well. 
"Pride goeth before the fall."
