Agreed. The broad middle band of jobs is being dumbed down. But the
mass of the populations in all the Western countries is now on the
point of steep decline due to family sizes far less than replacement.
Meanwhile, however, the number of professional, scientific and
technical jobs will have to grow in tomorrow's increasingly complex
modern society. They're part of what I call the 20-class which also
contains the very rich and the rich. (The "20" gives merely a vague
indication of its present-day percentage.) As the complexity of
society grows so will the 20-class. They'll be able to top up with
talented young recruits from the declining 80-class. At present rates
of population decline in Europe and also among white and black
Americans (but not Hispanic immigrants for another generation), then,
unless there's a turn-around in decreasing family size (that's been
going on all-told for three generations) then the whole population of
advanced countries will be what is now the 20-class.
