Well, the environment within which the corporate and other fiefs
strive to reduce *internal* complexity remains one on the cusp of
complexity catastrophe. That only contributes to the warlord
perspective on the part of each fiefdom.

Takeda Shingen -- depicted fictionally in Kagemusha -- held his own
among warring states and especially against Uesugi Kenshin for two or
three decades. But after his death, Takeda Katsuyori and the Takeda
clan were utterly devastated at the battle of Nagashino.

But then, you may know the lord is dissipated, a weasel, a
blood-thirsty psychopath or an incompetent.  But it may look better to
you to be a vassal at minimum wage, short hours and a split shift than
to have no manorial protection at all.
