While this isn't exactly something to make fun of, J. Walter Plinge has
some valid points about Prozac vs. the New Economy. Anyway, the ever more
widespread use of these drugs is a sad illustration of the completely wrong
approach of the "medico-industrial complex" to the whole problem of
depression, ADHD etc., that is: to treat symptoms (and quite incompetently
at that, sometimes worsening them) instead of addressing/removing the causes.
Let's face it, whole industries are built on this principle -- hence all
that denial and misinformation. What's much more cynical than JWP's essay
is Judi Kessler calling these drugs "God-sent" for patients. (If anything,
they are God-sent for so-called therapists who thusly can continue to
pretend they have a "cure".)
