The UCSD Department of Communication plans to appoint a senior faculty
member (Associate Professor to Professor) starting with the 2001-2002
academic year.  The appointee will hold a dual affiliation with
the Communication Department and UCSD's new Center for Research on
Educational Equity and Teaching Excellence (CREATE).  The Department
of Communication is an interdisciplinary department with a faculty
drawn from a variety of social science and humanities fields.  Its
distinguished faculty (5 Guggenheim Fellows and other award winners)
come together in their research and teaching interest in the various
media of communication, including language, print, film and theater,
broadcasting as well as web/internet/information technology.  CREATE
is a new academic unit whose mission includes improving education
and educational opportunity in San Diego.  The Communication/CREATE
faculty member would be a full member of the Communication
Department.  His or her CREATE affiliation would mean teaching at
least one course per year that supports CREATE as part of normal
teaching responsibilities in the Communication Department.  It would
also be expected that the faculty member would undertake research in
connection with one or more of CREATE's partner K-l2 schools in San
Diego.  We especially seek scholars who study communication processes
in relation to diversity and equity issues.  This interest can be
expressed in a variety of theoretical and empirical domains, including
the influence of race, class, gender and national identity on
educational achievement, technology as a transforming and stratifying
practice, communication practices in classrooms, schools, and
communities.

The Social Science Research Council is pleased to announce the
availability of new summer fellowships for innovative research on
information technology (IT), international cooperation, and global
security.  PhD students and faculty from any academic discipline may
apply.  These in-residence fellowships are designed for researchers
who currently work on cooperation and security issues and who want
to explore the role and impact of IT in this area; or for researchers
who work on IT and want to explore its relationship to cooperation
and security.

International cooperation and global security involve a wide range
of issues including new forms of global regulation and surveillance;
transboundary advocacy and global civil society; economic and
political "crisis" and transformation; unequal access to goods and
services; transnational identity politics; conflict and transboundary
intervention; military and warfare practices; and power and authority
in the global realm.  IT issues could involve the Internet and related
technologies such as those associated with telecommunications, data
processing, encryption, and systems of code; robotics, automation, and
simulation; and concerns bearing directly on connectivity and content
such as structures of information flow and processes of disinformation
and dissemination.
