Might we say that advertising is the compulsory "Gesammtkunstwerk"
of our time?

It appears that even some economists are beginning to suspect that
a lot of the "economic growth" of the past decade or so has been
spending on new techno-gizmos ("computers", etc.) feeding on
itself.

Sort of like the world's biggest potlatch, in my view. Although
I suspect some might find more "human value" in the potlatch,
and they may be right about this (and certainly potlatches produce
less toxic waste). But I'd rather see us get beyond both
potlatch and GNP mythologies.
