The stories that economists preach about where art and other inner motivated
activities comes from is disputed by the Roma culture for over a thousand
years. The external motivation of utilitarian thought is an anathema to the
meaning of the study of human expression through practice i.e. art. Art is
a psycho-physical pursuit of values in an expressive medium. If its intent
is simple profit then the purpose of the excellence is subverted and the
inner reality is destroyed. These cultural aspects of what the economists
call progress is the most genocidal aspect of neo-liberal economics today.
Simple materialism is no substitute for thousands of years of study from a
particular cultural point of view. It is just substituting one God for
another. The Gypsies will walk away from such idolatry if it means giving
up their identity.
