On the radio (NPR All
Things Considered) this afternoon, I heard George W Bush explaining that
when there is a surplus, the people deserve a refund. (Ergo,
according to his reasoning, the need for a US$1.6x10**9 tax cut.)

But I immediately saw a hidden wisdom in his assertion, of which
he was perhaps unaware: The rich have a surplus, therefore
they need to refund what they have beyond what is necessary to
reproduce their individual and species life, to those who have paid
for the products from which they derived their surplus ("surplus
value"? -- well, we need not go *that* far...).

And I had a vision of the invisible hand reducing *everybody* to
the level of subsistence, in the name of reducing surpluses.

(Obviously I didn't take "economics" in college....)

Yours in the belief that the cheapest alternative is not
always the least expensive (ref.: Wausau Insurance ad slogan)....
