Well Ed, every country wishes to put its best foot forward in what it shows.
The control of the old Communist State was such that they could do that.
However, the outright lies of the West in relation to the higher elements of
culture, (through the CIA, Ford and Rockefeller Foundations: see Saunders
"Cultural Cold War" or the film the "Cradle Will Rock", etc. for the
political purpose of the Rockefellers in the art they chose to sell to the
American Public) are now coming out because of the flood of exceptional
artists into the West from the Old Soviet Empire.
** Gergiev week - new webcast and interview **
"Perhaps the most sought-after conductor living and certainly one of
the musical world's most fascinating characters, Valery Gergiev
restored the reputation of the Kirov and put the Rotterdam Philharmonic
Orchestra firmly on the map".
GMN News on the Internet but the NYTimes is even more "glowing."
But the biggest news is that most of their cultural institutions have opted
to stay at home and have created an artistic Renaissance in Russia. One
could make the point that this is because of the new Capitalistic State but
even following the Neo-liberal (conservative) French Economic John the
Baptist S. Prophet who preached the coming Milton F. Messiah, you still
have to have "Supply to kick off Demand" and where did that "Supply" come
from? From the Soviet System and its emphasis on the higher more complex
cultural forms since it had lousy weather for agriculture and tourism and
the old 19th century economic formulas for factories were not up to the 21st
century. Of course they are still the only country capable of
collaborating with the US on the Space Station and military might.
I think the only reason that the Soviet Empire collapsed was that they got
spent under the table. How well would the US have done if the might of
European Capital had been turned against it for the first seventy years of
our existence? In fact how would we have done compared to Castro? I'm
not preaching their brand of Communism. I don't believe that despots are
human in any circumstance, however the despotism of Time Warner or the
energy companies in Texas is limited only by laws and government
regulations. Despots are despots and the organizational types are the
worst and escape responsibility the easiest.
Considering what the Eagle-Picher Mining company did on my reservation, (a
wound that still poisons children and kills adults) and what Canadian Gold
companies would do the Yellowstone (a world geo-thermal treasure) if they
were given the chance, and George W. may give them that chance. You stated
that the Cherokees were overwhelmed. That is the typical statement that
moves responsibility from immoral thievish individuals and limp wristed
Ministers who chose not to follow their morality and opted for what they
believed would avoid Civil War but didn't. The truth of the matter is
that the system of the people of the United States committed genocide for
gold and the affluence of the 30,000 Cherokees in the old Cherokee Nation in
Tennessee. Per Capita the Cherokees compared to the German Jews in
affluence. (Later the Osage would compare to the Kuwaitis) And the
propaganda of the Lewis Cass "Hunter/Gatherer" Forest Dweller pseudo science
that permeates anthropology down to the current day was the way that they
justified genocide. The Soviets were not nearly as efficient at getting
rid of their "problems" and escaping blame. They just hid it. The
Americans made their enemies dumb and child like and grieved about the
necessity of their annialation.
Artists are the eyes, ears and heart of a society. We also define a
hierarchy of quality. If you want to escape responsibility then first
kill the eyes, ears and heart. Then everything else is just business.
