I am very wary of claims similar to the one you make here. We come across
them constantly: "As is well known . . . " , "As has been proved by
research . . . ". These always occur when there is no validity in the
original statement.

In his original article -- nay diatribe -- Prof McMurty had plenty of space
and words to give straightforward evidence and make a reasoned case. If it
has weight enough, even a complex argument can be presented briefly and
simply.
