The new Argentinian President, Eduardo Duhalde, hinted yesterday that he would scrap the currency peg of the Peso to the US dollar. In his inauguration speech he said:
"My commitment is to finish with an economic model that has brought desperation to the vast majority of our people. It has demolished everything, destroyed the middle class, bankrupted our industries and pulverised the work of Argentines." Well, that's one way of putting it. If he prints enough Pesos to reverse all that and bring happiness to everybody, you can be certain that he'll print more to make everybody even happier and that hyperinflation will not be far behind. And the tragedy will intensify. Then it will be: "Move out of my way, Senor Duhalde."
