Paolo Freire told that the Brazilian peasants
to whom he taught literacy had all their lives
thought of themselves as lower than animals
because the animals were valued as assets that
needed to be cared for by the masters, whereas
they were expendible.

Being an asset may not be a very warm-and-fuzzy
status, but it may assure that you are treated
pretty well (again, not for your sake, but
because you have the masters "over a barrel").

Be an asset! (So you don't come back from the
next war in a body bag.)
