Pretty much anything written by Simon is great, though without Garfunkel, I fear the performance is no better than good.
Whether or not I like theory isn't the issue. I do think that scientific method is a tool we use to understand what's going on. Also, that the progression from hypothesis to Law is as good as it presently gets.
Shotter is indeed constricted by what his readers (listeners) expect from him. However, when this leads to a critique of meager substance, followed by no more than speculation about a replacement for the object of criticism - all couched in academic obfuscation, I don't accept it gracefully.
But, then, perhaps I'm just not able to appreciate what Shotter is saying. If that is so, I'm not entirely unhappy about it. I just think that language should convey meaning.

Hi Harry, Shotter is doing his best to follow Wittgenstein and he is stuck with the academic tools that he and his audience is most comfortable with: the essay. You like theory, great. I'm intrigued by Wittgenstein's 'social poetics'. Here is one poet's truth:Kathy's Song I hear the drizzle on the way Like a memory it falls Soft and warm continuing Tapping on my roof and walls And from the shelter of my mind Through the window of my eyes I gaze beyond the rain-drenched streets To England where my heart lies My mind's distracted and confused My thoughts are many miles away They lie with you in your sleep And kiss you when you start your day And this song I was writing is left undone I don't know why I spend my time Writing songs I can't believe With words that tear and strain to rhyme And so you see I have come to doubt All that I once held as true I stand alone without beliefs The only truth I know is you And as I watch the drops of rain Weave their weary paths and die I know that I am like the rain There but for the grace of you go I Paul Simon Of course 99% of the meaning is lost without the music. That is true for theory as well. Take care, Brian
