Jim Woolsey is a cautious, ethical, clinical
analyst. He is an able negotiator when provided with a worthwhile objective. He
gained his greatest kudos in the non-nuclear disarmament negotiations with the
USSR. His model of the world was formed during that time: one in which the world
is divided into two enemy camps. He is accurately viewed as a Nitze-type Cold
War hawk. He is not a Middle East or Islamic expert. Unfortunately, in his WWIV
model, he applies the Cold War model to the Middle East and Islamic
worlds. As with S. Huntington's equally unfortunate thesis on the 'clash
of civilizations', Jim is, IMO, seriously off the mark. Worse, it
introduces a way of looking at the world that, if enough people buy
into it, creates the very situation its warns against. And having
said all this, I reiterate that Jim is a man of integrity, and one of courage
and a sense of duty that sometimes allows others to take advantage of
him.
Cheers,
Lawry
