Back in the late 60s, I knew a person who wrote a play,
with the immortal line:

As I understand, the Ford Explorer case is exceptionally
ugly: Ford recommended underinflating the tires to
help minimize the rollover problem, but that caused
the tires to tend to blow out.  When push came to shove,
we saw how loyal one Multi-national was to another.
Ford blamed the tires and Firestone blamed Ford.

There was another way to go: Firestone could have refused
to sell tires to Ford for Explorers (in retrospect, I
bet they wished they had!).  Back in the late
19th Century, at the founding of Johns Hopkins
Hospital, Dr. William(?) Halstead, one of the
great early surgeons and founders of
Johns Hopkins, upon walking through a
hospital ward where antiseptic procedures were
not yet practiced, simply said:

    I cannot assume responsibility for any patient
    in this ward.
