Point well taken, Arthur.

I had forgotten a distinction I was proud of making in a number of papers I
wrote in graduate school between positive and negative power and slipped
into the rut of thinking of power in negative terms as a general thing.

Clearly, the kind of power I was referring to was the negative power as
generally thought of as the ability to prevail over the resistance of others
(I think it may have been Max Weber who phrased it in some such way).

Just as clearly there are many other, very positive kinds of power, as you
have properly indicated.

I think the context of my remarks about power as a destructive value had to
do with the worship of power to prevail against others that I see as being
considered a value in and of itself and that I see as being used to the
detriment of everyone, even those who hold it.

In our society, what I refer to as negative power actually gets in the way
of other kinds of power emerging to enrich people's lives.

Selma
