ok actually, after upgrading a bunch of packages, i re-emerged habak and it now
works. However habak can't set the background to jpg images? It can on all of
my other machines and it seems to be the same version, no clue.

Here fvwm-2.5.18-r1, fvwm-crystal-3.0.4, xorg-x11-7.1,
nvidia-drivers-1.0.9746, all is working correctly. My configuration is
at http://thenautilus.dyndns.org/fvwm-crystal/ if you want to look at
it, but it's just a minor modification of the standard one.
Are you sure you have all the programs tha fvwm-crystal invokes? With
the modularization of xorg, some programs are not installed by default.
Look at the output on the console, or redirect the fvwm-crystal
invocation to a file:
fvwm-crystal > /tmp/crystal.log 2>&1
and look at it, you might find some "no such file or directory" there.
