To do some simplification can maybe be a good thing but is not a necessity. (it can even have non wanted side effect if a given distribution already provide its own wrapper.). But I have no idea if it will just work with other distributions and other programs. If not, an user will not necessarily be happy to have to shift to another pager program in order to get it to work.
