I want to report my troubles with fvwm-crystal, not only in the hope to get some advice for myself, but also because I recognized looking for a solution on the Web that a couple of people seem to have made the same experience like me. Several have dumped fvwm-crystal therefore, and I confess that I wasn't so far from a couple of times. As a system administrator working with Unix for over twenty years, having developped and adapted device drivers and kernel components I fail to see that it is my personal deficiency alone.
My demand is straightforward: I have some applications or commands I am using regularly which are not automatically included into the standard menu hierarchy. To name two: the java application DimSum, a Chinese dictionary and language training application, and a call of oocalc or similar to view certain spreadsheet files also connected to learning and translating Chinese. I have been wrapping these calls in small shell scripts which I copied/linked to /usr/local/bin. I want to have these commands linked to some icon and displayed in the pulldown menu. I created a script e.g. ~dimsum~DimSum, first (it would fit well) under Applications/Knowledge/Languages, then after a couple of failures under Applications/Utilities, then created icons in the icons/apps/[22x22|32x32|48x48] directories (simply by copying an existing one to the name dimsum.png). After that, I restarted crystal and nothing happened. It took me some time only to get that far, as the documentation is really miserable (sorry to say that). I have configured normal fvwm from 1993 on, first fvwm, then fvwm2 without major troubles. Failing with such a trivial thing is confusing for me. Kindly advise, and if you know any howto, please point me to.
