FVWM-Crystal is a theme for FVWM, so you will find every thing into Fvwm
documentation. It is a huge doc, but well, it is no other. You can browse the
man pages at the fvwm website. The FAQ is very interesting too.
http://www.fvwm.org/documentation/ (with a good example of a PipeRead call
among other things).

Unfortunately, the FVWM forum is down and Thomas Adam doesn't seam to have the
time to fix it. As I doesn't have much time to work on crystal.

You can also look at the links section of fvwm.org.

If you understand French, it is a good example (but not what you want) about
customizing fvwm-crystal here:
http://miguel.moquillon.free.fr/miguel/articles/fvwm-crystal.html

An introduction about Fvwm-Buttons:
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-162177-highlight-fvwm.html
This last one can be what you are looking for.

Most of the problems I meat with it are related to quoting. You also have to
understand the syntax of the shell command in use, but that's the easy part in
most cases (for me).
