I don't have an example video, since it happens for any video played.
I did a little more testing on this and found out that if I start
MPlayer with the "-nokeepaspect" flag and put MPlayer into fullscreen
mode and restart FVWM, that MPlayer does indeed retain itself to
fullscreen.  So it probably is something to do with aspect ratio.

Note my MPlayer version is:  MPlayer 1.0rc2-4.2.3

I presume you also have something like "-nokeepaspect" when you start
MPlayer as well?

I can reproduce this also for seamonkey windows now that you mention it.
