This almost certainly sounds as though your fontpath is screwed somehow.
I would suggest you have a look at the output from 'xset q' and mess
around with the font path orderings in /etc/X11/{xorg.conf,XF86Config-4}
and/or change the -dpi switch that X11 starts with.
