One upper limit is set by hardware. The E250 can use two PCI busses (if you set the interface cards right), one standard (IIRC), one high-speed, wide. The standard one has 32bit x 33 MHz = 1Gbit/s (minus protocol overhead). Thus maximum throughput will be below 1Gbit/s - whatever duplex on network side.
