Ooops, I stand corrected. your below specs on Kernel is correct. its the 2nd
digit vice the 3rd. Sorry if I have confused anyone.

Actually it's the middle number that specifies a beta, not the last.

2.2.x - release
2.3.x - beta
2.4.x - release
2.5.x - beta
etc...
