Steve,
Now don't get me wrong.. Firewall-1 is a great product. If you have the
option of buying an Ultra 5 with solaris on it, I would go that route.
I've never had any problems with my Sun installs. We have also had good
luck with SOlaris x86 version of FW-1.
I got my CCSE cert last year as a sort of 'just for the hell of it' for my
company, and even though the class didn't teach much, it did get me a good
handle for what you can do with fw-1. I wouldn't run anything else. I just
wouldn't do it on linux.
Don't let your issues with the linux version taint your idea of the
firewall it self. I'm sure they will make improvements and make it WORK on
linux. I don't know what they were thinking releasing it for Linux in the
shape that it is in, but it is still "beta".
If you do go the solaris x86 route or sparc solaris, call checkpoint and
explain your problems, I'm sure they would be glad to transfer the license
for you.
