This is an interesting point - when I have spoken to some "old-hands" and
said we were doing VPN with CP and explained how it worked their opinion
seemed to be "great - you're doing an encrypted link - but NOT VPN....".
I think the term VPN used to mean an actual private "pipe" - maybe using a
managed EDI network a la IBM or some other VAN service and possibly
encrypted.
These days VPN just seems to mean encryption - usually over the Internet -
in fwall circles. Depends on how 'purist' you want to be and what
background you come from - I guess VPN sounds better in the marketing junk
and gets the idea across to CEO/CFO types.
I gave up assuming 100% accurate usage of IT terms long ago - each vendor
seems to twist their own spin to ideas - for example there are several
definitions of what the term SAN and NAS means for storage !

Checkpoint VPN client software

Checkpoint (at least) define a VPN as an ENCRYPTED link.
This is true for firewall-to-firewall and SecuRemote-to-firewall.
SecuRemote encrypts traffic that it sends, so you REQUIRE a VPN license,
and
software, at the firewall, as well as a SecuRemote license.
If you don't have an encryption license (or don't have an SR license) for
the firewall and the management station, you won't be able to set up a VPN,
and won't be able to use SR.
