John,
Just recently a similar topic was discussed. Do a search on
www.securepoint.com/fw1 to find more info.
I've had NT systems up for months, without issues. As
with any system, the more you run on it, the better your
chance of a problem(bug or security). Keep up on SP
and hotfixes(read ntbugtraq & bugtraq)
I would start by stripping down the NT box to the bare
minimum. Disable any unused services, protocols and
device drivers. You'd be amazed at how much of the
crap running on MS systems is not needed.
Don't forget to have patience and test each change
after a reboot. Make sure all is well and then move on
to the next change. Document all of your changes and
the order you did them in. It will come in handy for
debugging, and when you have to do it again.
You can start by visiting the following sites:
www.enteract.com/~lspitz
www.trustedsystems.com
www.regedit.com
www.checkpoint.com (look for their paper on performance
tuning.)
www.phoneboy.com
www.microsoft.com
Best of Luck!
Robert
