PHP can use FastCGI as well. Here's an example of PHP/Lighty/FCGI:

This is not really an option for shared hosting since these heavy
application processes may eat a lot of RAM but i think it's a very
good solution for large applications on dedicated servers.

They're great for VMs as well; dedicated ram but without the cost of a dedicated server. Brilliant for making you application fly.
