Here's a set of notes I took on installation of mythbuntu. I didn't
get screen shots but rest assured the install and much of the heavy
lifting is done through Ubuntu-like well thought through design and
guis. Tweaking mythtv itself is done through the usual configuration
screens.

These instruction stop short of actually setting up the MythTV backend.
That would be the goal of Thursday, which is trying to get people's back
end working with the subscription source, and recording channels OTA.
Hopefully when you take your boxes back home you will understand enough
of how the back end works so that you can hook up your cable box and get
it to work fairly smooth.

Once I had the cd burnt, it took me about 60 minutes from start to
finish with these instructions.

The X86_64 version of Mythbuntu seemed to work really well with the
PVR-500.

Mythbuntu installs the ivtv drivers for the Hauppauge PVR-X series --
which work pretty well.

There was some noise off the MPEG-2 cards, but after using the MPEG4
transcoder, the recordings really cleared up.

Apparently ivtv has had driver conflicts in the past with some other DVB
cards such as the pchdtv-3000.

Also the cheapest HDTV card that will work is the AverMedia A180 for
about $86. http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/AVerTV_HD_A180

-------

Boot up into the CD. The live CD didn't detect all the video hardware
so you can't count on it to work for your setup.

When the CD boots "select start or Install mythbuntu" icon.

Double click on "Install Mythbuntu"

Language:
Select English (or whatever makes sense for you)

Timezone:
Select America/New York

Keyboard layout:
Select US English keyboard

Select Manual Disk Layout (if you want XFS or special layouts) otherwise
choose Guided (which will use ext3)

For manual do something similar (assuming a 500 GB drive):
New ~ 30 GB ext partition for /
New ~ 2 * Ram for swap
New ~ 468 GB xfs partition for /var/lib/mythtv

Use something like the following to create the user.

User: Myth Front End User
logon: myth
passwd: != mythtv
hostname: MythTV (or something)

Note: logon of "mythtv" is already reserved by the OS.

Choose "Standard installation" which will get you pretty much everything
you would want. If you want the advanced features you can always
install them later

Install the system, and go get a cup of coffee. On my box this takes 5
minutes (!).

Before you reboot a window will prompt you to enter the schedules direct
and allows you to run MythTV setup

If you want to get myth working before you commit actual money, then go
ahead and reboot. Otherwise go ahead and get the schedules direct
account. The MythTV setup should be done later when you're actually
booted into the box, since the LiveCD may not have all the drivers.

click Finish and reboot

Before reboot, Mythbuntu will prompt you to take out the disc and press
enter

Boot into the new system and it should automatically start the front
end. Ignore the notice about restricted drivers available (for now)

Language:
Select English (or which ever locality you prefer)

Esc to exit from the myth front end

Applications -> mythbuntu control center
type myth user passwd passwd

[Possible bug: mythbuntu CD may have to be in the drive, otherwise it
gives no notice of an error) ]

Applications & plugins -> enable/disable all plugins
( and set passwd for mythweb)

Proprietary Drivers -> launch restricted driver manager if you want /
need

System Services -> enable/disable vnc/ssh/samba/nfs/mysql

Proprietary Codecs -> enable proprietary codecs. (hit apply) and then
you can select the codecs that you want to install
(apply again) if you're in 64 bit mode, you can't install the 32 bit
codecs.

advanced management -> launch update manager and get updates
Also check all three mysql options.
(apply)

Also you can launch mythtv backend setup from there as well

Run the backend setup from Appications -> backend setup

Ok the next to dialogs (adding mythtv group to the myth logon user)

Log out

Log back in

(esc to close the front end)

And start setting up the Backend.
