I have had good luck getting good gear for little money using New Egg, Tiger Direct and the like. Of course it will take more time to hunt up the most bang for the buck and if you have set yourself a budget (a good idea lest you end up over spending as 'feature creap' takes hold <g>). Also you still have to build the system as well. But you can save 20% to 40% depending.
