John,

That's a bit of a problem since ext3 is a bit more thorough at zeroing
inodes than plain old ext2, which just marks the file deleted and leaves
it at that.

However, some report success using (quote from Linuxquesions.org follows):
<quote>
1. Foremost:
http://foremost.sourceforge.net/
I was quite sucsessful with this program. It restored allot of multimedia
files and .doc files, but the directory structure and files names were all
similar to /gif/83772928.gif .

2. Photorec
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec
The results were quite similar to those produced by Foremost or Stellar
Phoenix Linux. However, it also restored some .tar and .gz files, which is
more along the lines of what I need.
</quote>

This could be a start, but of course the best way to handle this is "tar
xzvf <your-backup-archive-here>" ;) And backuppc is a very slick and easy
way to make sure that a backup archive exists and is uptodate. Which is
all too after the fact, I know.

And no, you definitely are NOT the only one to have done that's done that
- I'm *absolutely* sure at least one other has done that very thing, and
no, I didn't have an uptodate backup then either...

Good luck,
Vern
