Many thanks to Rob and Vern for their suggestions on possible ways to solve
my " rm * " dilemna.

Some days one is too dumb to realize how lucky one can be.. :-)  Turns out
on this machine there are two hard drives, and I had forgotten that in
anticipation to upgrading to RHEL4 from RH7 I had backed up "home" to the
second hard drive... Sometimes you just get lucky!!

Embarassed, relieved, but now smiling,
