The first time I did an Ubuntu install presentation, we started off
with a machine that had a fresh install of XP on it. Booted into it,
noted how it admits to being "at risk" without some sort of virus
software, noted how the network adapter was not recognized, how the
video card was running in VESA mode.

Then we went through how to install a dual boot setup; I had Sarah
driving the keyboard and mouse—this was her first real time using
Linux—which helped show how simple the process is.

While the install process was cranking away, I talked a bit about
"What is Free Software".

Then we booted into Ubuntu, noted how it doesn't need anti-virus crud,
how the network card "Just Worked", the video card was able to do full
resolution (nowadays, compositing). We plugged in a scanner, a
printer, my camera, an iPod, and they all "Just Worked".

We went through the process of instaling a game, Atomix, to show the
"Add/Remove..." dialog and how easy it is to install stuff, and how
vast the repos are.

I don't know if we want to do all that, but maybe we do.

I really think the "gimmick" of having someone who's never used Linux
drive the keyboard and mouse was particularly effective. The sorts of
questions they ask, the uncertainties they display, and even the
assumptions/mistakes they make, really help other people who've never
used Linux connect with the presentation.

P.S. Now, there were only 4 people there, and 3 came with me— :-) —but
it was really effective at convincing the one guy who didn't come with
me, and Sarah, to give Linux a shot.

In retrospect, it was kind of a foolish thing to do, giving a totally
beginner-oriented presentation for a Bloomington LUG meeting without
advertising it much to non-LUG members.
