Yeah, that should really save some battery life. I think the key variable here is what video mode gets passed on to the kernel at boot.
A quick communion with St.Google brings me this: http://www.linux.org/docs/ldp/howto/Keyboard-and-Console-HOWTO-16.html So it seems there may be other times the video mode can be tweaked.
