Hirens.BootCD.10.1.zip This is a bootable CD that lets you poke around on stuff on a hard drive.. Has about 50 useful utilities of all types. While probably intended for use on Windoz boxes I don't see why it would not be useful on linux boxes. [Looks like the code that pasts everything together on this CD is in fact linux]
Gave me a handle on saving all my data on a system. Turned out that the ultimate problem was bad memory slot(s) or memory controller. Many thanks for all your suggestions.
