Is anyone surprised? Is there a workaround?

I have converted a friend's old virus-laden computer into an Ubuntu 10.10
Desktop workstation. She has a new Windows 7 laptop and I told her that she
could just sit on the couch and print documents to a printer attached to the
Ubuntu machine and retrieve them later or have a family member do it (she is
developing MS and having mobility issues). I told her that because it took
me less than ten seconds apiece to set up remote printing to Ubuntu-attached
printers for my netbook (running Ubuntu) and my Mom's laptop (running Mac OS
X). This, on the other hand, has been a nightmare. I installed SAMBA, and
when things wouldn't work I followed advice gleaned from Internet fora such
as modifying the smb.conf file, changing some registry keys on the Windows
machine, adding a password to the Windows account (she wasn't using one,
since she has problems typing them because tremors associated with the MS).
Nothing has worked. Most of the advice I have found online applies to
Windows XP, and the Windows 7-specific advice doesn't seem to work. Does
anyone have a successful Windows7 to Ubuntu network printing setup going, or
is this just doomed to failure?
