I can't offer specific advice, but a few comments:
 - In this day and age anything advising "registry tweaks" should be
avoided. Yes its Windows, but its matured to the point where registry
tweaks are rare
 - Focus on making the desktop expose itself in a way friendly to
Windows. Far easier to maintain and tweak the Linux server and let the
laptop be a plain jane Win7 machine
 - I have a Windows XP box printing to a printer on a Mac shared using
IPP. Should work in Linux just as well. Choose a common print protocol
SAMBA, IPP, etc. and expose that

Is it failing in any sort of specific way? Any logs?
