Personally not really a fan of KDE, I've been using XFCE4 after having issues with Gnome about 2 years ago, I can't imagine ever needing another DE, I would probably even be content with Fluxbox.
I tried the new Gnome Shell and was really not all that impressed, though the stuff they are doing with Javascript (GJS/Seed) and CSS for native application development is really great.
