Long Answer...

As a business consultant with many major industries the maximum speed
is never the issue.  Just like in web based applications you don't buy
one super computer and hope it works. Looking at scale is important.
I like to call it "The Business of N+1" where a company or group can
add and remove one unit of any resource as they see fit.  So spending
X dollars extra for N+1 scale will always get the vote.

The potential maximum is also dependent on the end points. You can
install a gigabit network card in a PCI slot but the math says that it
can't transport full wire speed.  Often switches and fiber
transceivers can't work a full speed.  As I was taught as a child,
follow the money and buy two of everything important.
