More clarifications.
1) All external programs are banned; I want this to be
   pure cross-platform Perl. I acknowledge, however, that
   it will be interesting in the post-mortem to see if you
   can go lower using external Unix commands, say.
2) Please don't meddle with environment variables.
   I know there is some wag out there who will set PS1
   and claim a golf score of zero :).
