Peter.
People were stating it was a problem with their internet service, which isn't
true.
I have had the self-assigned IP problem a number of times, it means the router
is not issueing an IP address correctly via DHCP, but even manually configuring
doesnt resolve.
Sometimes renewing the DHCP lease works, sometimes rebooting fixes it,
sometimes it is conflicting hardware.
My friend has a DLink router and a Safecom USB wireless stick and he cannot get
out of it. My PowerBook with Airport card it works fine everytime.

Let's revive this thread. I'm having this same problem again.

In a way, it does have to do with the ISP because it provided the
router and other equipment to get on-line. So, anything that happens
is the ISP's fault.
As to what causes it, I have gained a clue. I had the network pain
of System's Prefs open while hitting the "try again" button over and
over. What it kept saying was that the computer was trying to get on
line but kept getting a self-assigned IP address and could not access
the internet.
So, what causes that?
Also, Simon seems to be correct that the problem is in the local
network. I unplugged the network cable from the wireless router and
plugged it directly into my computer. I got on-line. So the
wireless router is not working. Why?
