You basically have to reboot the machine into OS > 9(hopefully you can do so) or you will need an OS 9 CD. Specifically, it is a PRAM setting on the Mac. The bit involved is set properly when you boot into Mac OS 9. The problem will return again the next time you zap the PRAM then boot directly into Mac OS X. In the short term, the temporary solution is to hit the increase brightness toggle button. The light will come back on.
