White, Pink, or Brown noise generators?

Even better would be Active Noise Cancellation (Adaptive Noise
Cancellation?) software. I don't know if there is some Gnu team
working on this? The idea is that the computer plays back a reverse
image soundwave through its speakers of whatever constant noise
signal it picks up from a microphone, just loud enough to cancel out
the original sound.
It really does work: back in 1998, when I bought my first Wallstreet,
I checked out the demo model which had an extraordinarily quiet hard
drive. It was barely audible even with an ear pressed to the
computer body.
Not so the computer delivered to me a few weeks later, which had one
of the noisiest drives I have ever heard in any laptop then or since,
bar none. Asked to account for this, the dealer ushered me into a
"quiet room" at the back of his store, where neither he, nor his
service manager, nor indeed I, were able to hear any noise at all
from my hard drive.
Only later, when it was too late, I realised that room had been
unnaturally quiet... so quiet, that it could only have been achieved
using a state of the art active noise cancellation system.

(From that time on, I didn't set foot in his store except to make
warranty claims on equipment purchased from other dealers)
