I hope you are talking about PowerBooks and not PowerMacs. My Aluminum PowerBook G4 1.67 (Feb. 2005) had a memory slot failure early on and was replaced via warranty/AppleCare. No problems since. The bottom one is the one that failed and one symptom was loss of start up bong. I did upgrade to 2 GB of RAM later on and had no problems.
