You mean this Pismo has an expensive G4 CPU upgrade, or it's actually
a normal G3 Pismo?

Some HDs are incompatible with the Pismo.
The Firewire port is a great resource. You can boot from external
Firewire devices, or boot into Target Disk mode by holding the "T" key
at startup and connecting the Pismo to another Mac with a FW cable so
that the Pismo HD mounts on the other Mac and is available for repair
or reinstallation. I'd try Target Disk boot if I had this Pismo just
to check out the HD with Disk Utility.
