Tim This might have been because the portable Mac was stuck in the G4 era for a long time. By the time the MacBook came out portable Mac users were gagging for an upgrade.
Something I feel was purposely done by Apple to ensure the Intel transition was a success. --- it was the biggest single performance increase between Macs I've ever seen, and it was by huge margins.
