I've been using Tiger on my 550-g4 pismo for about a year now and I
have been pretty happy with it but I admit finally that its 576 RAM is
insufficient. Running CPU monitor in the dock showing the RAM status
often gets the free RAM down to a sliver of the pie, even though I am
not generating any larger swap files, I know that it can't keep
everything it wants to in the RAM and has to reload libraries from the
hard drive a lot.
Contrastingly my DA-1.5ghz does pretty well with a gigabyte. For the
pismo if going to a gig, remember that some 512 modules can be too fat
for the lower slot.
I've been through several hard drives on this one, the latest
benchmarks at about 40MB/s and is an 80GB, the previous a 40GB clocked
at about 17...
Mine needs a sound card replace and I am not sure I want to do it
myself -- has anyone here done it ?
The directions I have say to remove some of the screen parts -- is
that really necessary ?
Not sure if I am going to keep this, or what. Not going to Intel, I am
getting an AMD laptop for Linux/KDE, and I might sell pismo and get a
faster g4 book but leopard doesn't interest me too much as support for
powerpc is diminishing so much in the MacOS and for Linux not so much
but after all I am getting the other one for that anyway (plus I still
have ancient g3 notebook w/ linux and can clone that to desktops)
Sad to say the Pismo can sell for $200 and can buy a 1.5ghz g4 for as
little as $300...
