Pete,

Check if your main email provider has recently changed its settings.

It happened to me with AT&T (I could send but not receive), and I had
to change a couple values before Mail could continue downloading my
messages. They even had a dedicated page for Mail under OS X, with the
precise instructions on how to do it. I don't know what your case is,
if your main email account is with your ISP or not, but it's worth a
try one way or the other.
